English Parliamentary Debate Circumstance of West Sulawesi

          I think Debate is a common word which is commonly heard by every single individuals. Yup, Debate is a kind of formal discussion between individuals or teams which has different perspective or point of view toward the motion (debate topic). In the broadly deep definition, Debate also can be defined as a tool that can basically develop and maintain our public speaking. Moreover, more than verbal skill, essentially debate enhances our arguments, critical thinking, tolerance and understanding of the divergent. Those major aspects are basically able to trigger the significant enhancing of our public speaking, because when we would like to speak up, indeed we have to have idea and idea comes from those major aspects. That's why a lot of countries support it to be conducted in many schools and varsities.


          Well, I was invited as adjudicator in the National School Debating Championship (NSDC) West Sulawesi. I saw a lot of potential of the high school debaters. Some of them were basically able to construct argument but still lack of reasoning, there are still many points that needed to be clarified, second is evidence, most of them were actually data oriented, means they only bring data related to the motion without considering about whether or not it would simply support their arguments or in other word, they failed to engage their data to their arguments. Moreover, almost every debater didn't stick with the status quo ( the current circumstance). So, that's why they failed to touch the central of the debate.


         The competition was held in Berkah Hotel Mamuju, basically there were two competitions were held at once, Indonesia and English Debate but my job was English Debate Adjudicator only. The motion for round one was THBT war exists for peace, the second round was THW allow citizen to sue their government for failure to provide a minimum standard of welfare. The third round was THW imprison people who abuse pets and animal. Quarter Final was THW ban all communication tech companies (such as Google, Apple, FB, WA). Semi Final was THBT Religious lesson should not be taught in school and for the Grand Final round was THW allow consensual cannibalism.
